How to Clean Synthetic Turf

So, you’ve made the smart move to install artificial or synthetic turf in your yard. It’s a great and cost-effective way to keep your yard looking amazing throughout the year in any climate.

While these benefits are great, many homeowners opt for synthetic grass because it’s much easier to maintain than a traditional lawn. Lawn care can suck away precious free time throughout the week. Depending on your yard size, you may lose your entire weekend. Between seeding, mowing, edging, and weeding, it takes tremendous effort to keep a lawn looking great. With synthetic lawns, tending to your yard is much simpler.

How to Maintain Your Synthetic Lawn

Cleaning synthetic turf can be accomplished in a few simple steps.

  1. Remove debris: While your lawn is synthetic, your trees aren’t, and that means they will continue to drop leaves on your synthetic lawn. Therefore, it’s essential to occasionally use a plastic rake to get rid of the leaves. Do not use a metal one since metal can damage the lawn. It’s easier to rake while the leaves are dry. Additionally, regularly clean up any other debris on the synthetic turf, such as felled branches or animal waste.
  2. Brush the grass: Cross-brushing your artificial grass can prevent it from getting flattened or matted. The easiest method is to use a power broom that removes dirt from deep within the grass blades and fluffs up the lawn to make it appear full and lush at all times. Brushing your grass makes your lawn look its best.
  3. Remove weeds: Unfortunately, weeds can still grow in the soil under the turf and even grow through the surface of your synthetic lawn. You will want to remove these weeds to keep your yard looking fantastic. Unfortunately, pulling or yanking them out, like you may have done with a standard lawn, can cause further damage to your synthetic lawn. Instead, add weed killer to the root of the weed and slowly pull it out by hand.
  4. Rinse the lawn: Just like a regular lawn, synthetic can accumulate dirt, dust, and pollen. Rinsing it off periodically will keep it looking great and prevent massive accumulations from forming.
  5. Remove stains or spills: No matter how careful you are, there’s bound to be an accident or spill on your synthetic grass at some point. The longer you have it, the more chances there are for these accidents to create stains, which leave your lawn looking terrible. Some stains, such as motor oil, can leave permanent stains, so it’s best to be extra careful when handling those materials. Aside from greases and oils, most other stains are relatively easy to address. You can spray the stain with a water and diluted detergent solution. Once on the stain, use a sponge or soft cloth to rub the solution until the stain has lifted. Once done, just rinse away the detergent.
